Blue Review: Blast from the Past

Part 1: Nedum Onuoha

By Aaron Leggott

After last week's analysis of the recent signings this summer, I decided to go for a lighthearted look at some memorable names from City's past. Every five weeks, I will look back at one name from each year, starting the first part with a name from 2010. The first edition sees me look at one of our academy's products in Nedum Onuoha.

Onouha will probably be one of those who rue the timing of Sheikh Mansour's takeover. After making his Premier League debut as a substitute against Norwich City in 2004, he was initially played as a right back by then manager Kevin Keegan, eventually making 18 appearances in his debut season.

Injuries plagued Onouha's time at the Blues and despite forming a solid partnership alongside Richard Dunne during the latter half of the 2008/09 season, he slowly found himself surplus to requirements at City.

In came the likes of Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott during the summer, and despite signing a five year contract extension in July 2009, he was loaned out to Sunderland the following season after finding first team chances limited.

And after making 95 appearances for City, Onouha eventually left on a permanent deal in January 2012 as he signed for QPR under previous City manager Mark Hughes.

As a lifelong City fan, Onouha was clearly disappointed to leave the Blues but will hold fond memories of his time at the Etihad Stadium - most notably his man of the match performance against Birmingham when he scored a marvelous solo goal in April 2010.

Have a look at Nedum's season highlights from 2009/10 season below:
